MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR-GENERAL OF UNESCO

Irina_Bokova

UNESCO, the United Nations agency
responsible for culture and communication,
believes that film is a powerful force by
which societies learn about each other’s
cultures and values. It illustrates the
evolution of societies, the richness of
their cultures and the manifold ways in
which they see themselves and the
world. As such, film is vital to fostering
cultural diversity and promoting mutual
understanding, dialogue and peace.

It is for this reason that UNESCO forged its link with APSA, which it sees as a most important cultural initiative, not just in the Asia-Pacific region, but globally. These awards acknowledge the way in which filmmakers attest to their respective cultural influences and sense of place and people.

UNESCO is proud of the special award that is given in its name for outstanding contributions to the promotion and preservation of cultural diversity through film. I would like to thank the State Government of Queensland for pioneering this initiative which also enjoys the collaboration of CNN International and FIAPF.

In a world in need of greater solidarity, APSA clearly serves as a step in the right direction for building peace in the minds of humankind.
