NOVEMBER 2009
MESSAGE FROM THE PREMIER OF QUEENSLAND

Premier-Anna-Bligh-MP

The Asia Pacific Screen Awards, now in their third year, have been a great initiative for Queensland. The APSAs are a unique and important cultural collaboration for the Asia-Pacific region and for its burgeoning film industry and Queensland is a vibrant part of that.

APSA is making a difference in many ways: through its commitment to the expression of cultural diversity; by sharing the stories and experiences of the people of Asia-Pacific; and through its partnership with CNN International, providing global television coverage for these stories and the people who tell them.

In the same way that film festivals and events like Cannes, Venice, Berlin and Pusan enhance the cultural lives of their cities, it is great to see the international influence that APSA is beginning to develop.

I believe that investment in culture is an essential ingredient of economic development. That is why my Government has invested in APSA once again this year to benefit, through film, the community of Queensland and our regional neighbours.

Film opens windows to many opportunities, not just in filmmaking but in trade, tourism and in friendship. It is rewarding that Queensland has brought together the countries of Asia-Pacific in an initiative of such positive and important consequence, not just to our film industries, but to our respective cultures.

Finally, may I thank the filmmakers and organisations, UNESCO, FIAPF and CNN International, for their belief in the objectives of APSA.
